In mid November, 1914, 5th Division, including the 1st Devonshire battalion of 14 Brigade moved to the Messines Ridge front, north of Neuve Eglise and facing Wytschaete, where they remained for the rest of the winter. On 23rd December, 1914, 1st Devonshire moved into trenches at Wulverghem where they remained until relieved on 29th December. Thomas Kennedy was killed on 24th December, a day which according to the battalion diary was quiet except for some sniping during the evening and it is likely that it was this that caused his death. |
